Aguas de Alicante celebrates World Water Day in La Marjal Park

In December 1992, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the resolution declaring 22 March World Water Day, as of 1993.

The General Assembly also declared the period 2018-2028 the International Decade for Action – Water for Sustainable Development, starting on 22 March 2018.

As part of its environmental policy, Aguas de Alicante will be celebrating this day at La Marjal Park, an example of environmental and social sustainability.

La Marjal Park acts as a retention tank to temporarily store accumulated rainwater while also providing a recreational area for the public. It has a unique form and landscape that distinguishes it from surrounding green areas.

This year Aguas de Alicante considered the park to be the best environmental setting to celebrate World Water Day, with an extensive programme for all members of society, from those working in education, to those in associations or the social sectors and sport.

The activity programme for the day starts at 8:30 am with a yoga session titled ‘Health in the Sun’, followed by:

TRADITIONAL GAMES

  • Sack races
  • Egg-and-spoon game
  • Pass the apple
  • Steal the handkerchief
  • Musical chairs
  • Water drip curtain
  • Theatre with the Water Sprites

SPORTS

Professionals from CD Agustinos Alicante, Fundación Lucentum Baloncesto Alicante and Sporting Plaza de Argel Women’s Football will show the value of sport in human development and the importance of water for being well hydrated, as our health depends on it. The professionals will hold training exercises in each sport for children from the schools taking part.

BIRDWATCHING WORKSHOP

The Ornithology Association will explain migratory movements and the importance of the birds in the La Marjal Park. They’ll also show us how to put rings on birds.

WATER TASTINGS

The Aguas de Alicante water quality manager will host a number of blind water-tasting sessions to compare different types of water. You’ll be surprised at the subtle differences between each one.

OUTDOOR PAINTING

Amateur artists from Alicante will be creating outdoor art to depict details from the views of the park. All the paintings will then be exhibited at the Museo de Aguas de Alicante in Pozos Garrigós.

All these activities will take place in the morning from 9:30 am to 1:00 pm.

FAMILY CROSS COUNTRY

At 5:30 pm there will be a family race around the La Marjal Park to promote family sport.
The race will be divided into two categories:

  • Children aged up to 9 accompanied by parents
  • 10 to 15-year-olds

The cross-country race is a chance for families to take part in a sporting event together in a non-competitive way.

CONCERT

At 7:00 pm Musical performance by the cutting-edge '90s Alicante rock group Situación Limite, winner of the Regional Government of Valencia’s Circuito Rock award in 1992. Twenty-five years on, the group has returned to the stage, playing a mix of cover versions from the 1980s-1990s and their own songs. A Situación Limite concert is a trip back in time to the classic national and international pop-rock hits from these two decades. Suitable for all ages.

As well as the previously mentioned associations and groups, also taking part are a number of Alicante schools, with a total of 400 schoolchildren, 75 people from the APSA association, neighbours’ associations such as Playa Blanca de la Albufereta, ALINUR, the Ballesol nursing home, the Pintores Freaks and Tercer Tiempo Intercultural associations, specialist ornithologists, the Aguas de Alicante Lab and Mercalicante, the latter providing fruit for participants to promote healthy habits.

All activities are free and open to anyone.
